Trendy Jewelry vs. Timeless Pieces

Every woman develops her own personal taste when it comes to jewelry.  Some women are instinctively drawn to a particular style, era, or stone, and for others it can take an entire lifetime of changing tastes to nail down what you like.  But whether you prefer to display the current trends in jewelry on your fingers, ears, and neck, or you’d rather fall back on tried-and-true fashions that women have been wearing for generations, you might find that at some point, you are keen to go outside your comfort zone and cross over to the other side of the aisle.  Here are just a few reasons a woman might want to weigh the pros and cons of trendy versus timeless jewelry – and ultimately embrace both.

For one thing, these two disparate styles of accessories are going to go with different types of outfits and they’re going to be suitable for very different occasions.  In general, classic jewelry styles should be worn with classic outfits.  If you’re dressing up for a formal affair, for example, you’ll probably want to pair a strand of pearls with some diamond studs.  This timeless look is almost never wrong with an evening gown.  But if the event is a cocktail party, which tends to be a little more casual-dressy as evening affairs go (with knee- or tea-length dresses instead of floor-length), you probably want to select trendier jewelry to complement your modern ensemble (just don’t go with junk jewelry).  And your average daytime outing necessitates only that you accessorize with fun and funky pieces.  If your wardrobe is bland and functional (for work or childcare purposes), this is where you can let your personality shine through with some fabulous trendy pieces of the not-too-expensive variety.

Of course, you’ll have to make a decision based on the occasion or dress code, but you can generally assume that formal events call for timeless pieces (especially since you might end up with photos that hang around for quite a while on your walls) while more casual affairs demand a trendy look that better suits a modern style.  You might have some overlap; diamond studs are almost never a poor choice.  But on the whole, you should probably stick to one look.

Now you may be wondering what to do about pieces that you wear all the time, such as a wedding set.  What you choose will depend largely on your personal taste, but timeless pieces are usually the way to go.  You simply can’t go wrong with a Tiffany-style solitaire, which is so simple that it can be paired with literally any other type of jewelry.  However, not every woman wants to adopt a look that they perceive as boring and bland (aka classic), especially when there are so many exciting new styles on the market to choose from.  Just remember if you decide to go with a trendy look (such as a colored stone, an unusual cut, or a custom setting) you might be limiting your options when it comes to adding other pieces, as well as dating yourself in the long run.
