If you go head-over-heels for a black, leather jacket, knee-high jack-boots, and a whole lot of buckles, then you’re going to love the fashion trend that has been sweeping the runways. That’s right, military-inspired is out and biker chic has taken center stage as the hottest trend heading into spring. Although temperatures are starting to rise across the northern hemisphere, it’s not too late to get a handle on the look that ladies everywhere are going hog-wild for. Whether or not your ride is a chopper is irrelevant. With some of the many adaptations of biker chic now available at just about every price point, you can easily add a little edge to your ensemble or sport head-to-toe biker fashion. Here are just a few ways you can work the look into your wardrobe for a taste of the road (without risking road-rash).
One of the best pieces you can get is a leather jacket, and there are a lot of biker-inspired fashions that won’t necessarily make you look you’ve been on a bike all day. For one thing, you don’t necessarily have to opt for black. Shades of beige and silver rocked the runways, and many looks featured two-tone leather or a belt in a bright shade to pop and pronounce your waistline. Also popular were quilted accents (on sleeves, pockets, or even just at the elbows or shoulders) and other embellishments like buckles on the sleeves. And many styles were notably different from their biker roots in that the length of the jacket extended to the hip (much more flattering for the average woman than waist-length). The point is, look for a modern shape and a little added value with the accents rather than the plain, boring, boxy black that is traditional.
The next thing you’ll need for a look that is biker chic is a great pair of motorcycle boots. Whether you go with a tall block heel or the chunky hunk of rubber that is common for the biker boot, there is one thing you must embrace, and that is the knee-high upper portion. Because bikers need to protect their legs in case of a spill, tall boots are just what the doctor ordered. You might want to skip over-the-knee options, however, especially if you’re going to be sitting on the back of a bike. As for embellishments, a couple of buckles (around the ankle or the top of the boot) and even studded metal plates are pretty much par for the course if you want to pull off this targeted trend.
Other than that, you could consider a pair of leather leggings or leather chaps (totally hot with a few pin-tucking details) if you’ve got the bod for it. And if you pair any of these leathery pieces with a plain, white, V-neck tee, you will definitely be rocking an edgy yet sophisticated look. Steer clear of some of the fringe accoutrements, such as studded collars or bracelets, since these can push your style over the edge and into dangerously “goth” territory. But definitely get on board with a cool pair of shades, such as the ‘80s-era Ray-Bans that seem to be making a comeback right now, as a way to finish off a polished ensemble.
